Connections Between Reading and Writing

It’s easy to get lost in a book, whether a rich fantasy, haunting mystery, or thrilling sci-fi novel. However, have you ever wondered about the relationship between those words and writing? The author who wrote the book had to have an understanding of the relationship between words and the grammar, plotlines, and conventions behind the story. Reading and writing have an important relationship, and working on one often improves you better at the other.

Teaching students both reading and writing in a combined manner builds a student’s skills in both areas. By reading from a variety of genres, using sound instruction in learning, and employing verbal working memory, students can develop a foundation for reading and writing later on in life.

Genre Variety

Reading from multiple genres and understanding the endless possibilities and forms of writing out there improves literacy. This technique, known as genre variety, helps children learn a variety of text structures and language through the unique writing styles employed by different authors. This familiarizes kids with diverse thought processes and creates more creative, distinctive writers.

Sound Instruction

Sound instruction is a method of teaching which involves sounding letters out and then combining these phonemes to make meaningful letters and words. This helps children consolidate the visual input of written letters with the auditory input of hearing the letters. Integrating lessons which prioritize phonemic awareness, improves reading and therefore writing

Verbal Working Memory

Verbal working memory is a powerful tool which helps children link words. For example, reading and writing from a young age allows children to connect similar words. An example of this is rhymes, such as fox and box or cat and hat.

Reading and writing are important skills, and ones that we encourage here at WriteOn! If you choose to register your child for a workshop, they will get the chance to unleash their imagination and discover the writer within while developing literacy skills, building confidence, and encouraging creativity.
